"Vivencias en Clave Cubana" is the debut solo album of Cuban cuatro master Kiki Valera, a member of the Familia Valera Miranda, a century-old group and one of the most important purveyors of the Son Cubano. While completely dedicated to the performance of traditional Cuban music, Valera was exposed to Pat Metheny, Wes Montgomery and Chick Corea through cassette tapes while in school and those jazz inspirations elevate the quality of his cuatro solos in subtle and beautiful ways. Joined here by childhood friend, renowned Cuban vocalist Coco Freeman, Valera and his exciting ensemble pair 12 original songs with beautiful instrumental work in ways that will make you dance, laugh, and possibly shed a tear. Cuba's traditional music has a history of constant evolution from its very beginnings. With "Vivencias en Clave Cubana," Kiki Valera continues in that spirit.

about

EL PERRO DE JUAN fondly recalls a night when Kiki's father was chased up a tree by his brother Juan's ferocious dog.

lyrics

Coro-1:

Estaba tan embullado, perfumado y bien vestido

Coro-2:
Que si no corro, me muerde
Ese maldito animal
Que me va a coger el día
Y no he podido bailar

Ay… Que si no corro, me muerde
Ese maldito animal

Coro-2: repeat

Con las ganas que tenia de gozar y bailar

Coro-2: repeat

Y el perro me perseguía y a la mata fui a parar

Coro-2: repeat

Coro-3:
Que si no corro, me muerde

Tan rica que está la fiesta

Coro-3: repeat

Y no he podido bailar

Coro-3: repeat

Ese maldito perrito, ese furioso animal

Coro-2: repeat

Candela candela candela, que no me dejó bailar

Que me va a coger el día

For our listeners who don't speak Spanish, we offer this English-language guide to our lyrics. It is not a word for word translation (that never works well in any language), and you won't be able to sing along in English, but we hope that it will help you better understand our songs.

EL PERRO DE JUAN (Juan's dog)

(First chorus)
I wanted to get to the party to cut loose
but Juan's dog ruined the whole plan
I wanted to dance until dawn
But I couldn’t imagine what was going to happen.....

I came prepared for a high-spirited night
a night of enjoying beer, rum and wine,
I was pumped up, perfumed and well-dressed
to hook up at the party with a lady with style

Along the way the moon was smiling
and the crickets adorned my joy with their song
It never crossed my mind
that my luck could change,
AY, my luck....

(repeat first chorus)

And when I reached the gates of the longed for venue
I couldn’t avoid jumping from a ferocious bark
A big and furious dog showed his fangs
Threatening to bite me, and I ran very fast

And the road was like a running track
I broke all the records of Carl Lewis and Bolt
and climbed up a tree
It was my only good luck
AY, my luck....

(second chorus)

If I didn't run, it would bite me
that cursed animal
It stole my whole night
and I could not dance
